St Mary’s College was opened by Bishop O’Dea on August 25 1912. Its purpose was to serve the educational needs of Galway and of the diocese. Generous scholarships were provided to this end.

In recognition of the contribution of players to the success of soccer in the county, the Mayo League last week announced the introduction of a third-level sports scholarship scheme for the 2011/12 academic year.
