St Mary’s College was opened by Bishop O’Dea on August 25 1912. Its purpose was to serve the educational needs of Galway and of the diocese. Generous scholarships were provided to this end.

Mayo league launches scholarship scheme

In recognition of the contribution of players to the success of soccer in the county, the Mayo League last week announced the introduction of a third-level sports scholarship scheme for the 2011/12 academic year. Five scholarships, valued at €1,000 each, will be awarded to players registered with the Mayo League. Applicants sought for Brendan Hopkins scholarships at GMIT

Brendan Hopkins, who was a director of Castlebar Credit Union for 18 years, died tragically in a car accident in 2002. As a mark of appreciation of his dedicated work and in order to perpetuate his memory, the board of directors approached his family and GMIT Castlebar with a view to setting up a scholarship scheme.
